Architectural Metallic Paints vs. Artist Metallics
Architectural vs Artist Metallics

Whats the difference between Blue PearlTM Architectural Metallics and HeathTM Artist Metallics

Metallic Paint

Blue PearlTM Metallic Paint and HeathTM Artist Metallics are both manufactured by Perfetto IncTM. The paints share similiar properties in that they both are very pearlescent looking, both are exterior and very durable with excellent adhesion. The Blue Pearl line of architectural metallics paints is offered in 83 factory colors with custom colors available at an upcharge. HeathTM Artist Metallics are available in 42 factory colors. Both paints have good opacity. The primary difference is the manner in which the Rheological profile is build. Rheology is a measurement of how viscosity changes when mechanical pressure is applied to a paint such as mixing, brushing, shaking, spraying etc. Blue PearlTM Metallic paints are designed to "flow and level" flat when sprayed or brushed, a property which is disirable in architectural paints. HeathTM Artist Metallics have what we call good "tooling strength" which means they do a good job of holding their structure and not flowing out. This makes them well suited for art applications because when a brush stroke is applied, it stays put where the artist applies it. This is accomplished by using polymers which associate with a aqueous phase of the coating, which means they swell and associate with the water in the coating thereby thickening it. Blue Pearl Metallic paints are often times used in art applications but their role is often times that of a base coat. Blue PearlTM Metallic Paint may be mixed with Heath extending medium to slow down the drying time and increase its "tooling strength". The image below shows a brushed swatch of Blue Pearl Metallic Paint on the left and HeathTM Artist Metallic paint on the right, both in gold.
